Poe 1953, Pt. 3

(Continued from Poe 1953, Pt. 2)

CHILLING TALES  16
"THE CURSE OF METZENGERSTEIN"

Youthful was a publisher that specialized in non-superhero titles (horror, westerns, humor, romance).  One of their notable titles was CAPTAIN SCIENCE, which became FANTASTIC, BEWARE, and finally, CHILLING TALES.  Many comics publishers discovered they could save a lot of money in 2nd-class mailing permits by simply changing the name of an existing series while maintaining the numbering.

This was the 4th issue under the name CHILLING TALES.  Note the cover, which reads, "Beware Tales Of Horror / CHILLING TALES", picking up where the earlier covers with "Chilling Tales Of Terror / BEWARE!" had left off.  The skull and crossbones remains (more or less) the same.

12 months (and 6 issues) after their version of "THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM", Youthful presented another Poe tale, the far-less-known...

     "METZENGERSTEIN".

Isn't it nice to have all these collected in ONE place on this blog?

In 1968, "Metzengerstein" was loosely adapted as the first story of a 3-part anthology film called "HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRES" (released in the U.S. by American International as "SPIRITS OF THE DEAD").
Jane Fonda as "Contessa Frederique de Metzengerstein"
As an aside, please note how this shot from THE RAVEN (1963)
resembles the one in Page 10, panel 4.
